Project Overview
Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is located in the central region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Also known as Bhogapuram International Airport, the new greenfield aviation project is being developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL) on approximately 2,203 acres of land in the Vizianagaram district of Visakhapatnam.
Once completed, the International Airport will serve as the primary entry point into North Andhra Pradesh, and its 3,800-meter runway will accommodate the landing and takeoff of large commercial aircraft, with operations expected to begin in June 2026. Due to its scale, it requires a comprehensive 110 KLD STP Installation for the International Airport, and an environmentally sustainable approach to managing the disposal of wastewater generated by both ongoing construction and all airport operations, including compliance with the regional Pollution Control Board’s standards.
The Challenge
Airports are a type of major infrastructure project that generate large volumes of wastewater by virtue of their construction activities, including the use of temporary facilities by construction personnel, contractor accommodations during construction of the airport, the various contractor support offices, and the airport operations that will take place once the airport begins its commercial operations. Specific project requirements included:
- Timeliness of expedited delivery for the amount of wastewater produced.
- Compact-sized systems to enable their installation without interfering with active civil construction efforts.
- Producing high-quality treated water that can be utilized for non-potable water reclamation/reuse.
- Full compliance with the regulations documented by the local Pollution Control Board.
- Minimizing disturbance of ongoing construction activities and reducing future operational maintenance costs.
The Sewage Treatment Plant System from Hydromo comes with the following features:
– Multi-stage treatment system: screening stage, primary settling stage, biological treatment stage, tertiary filtration stage, and disinfection stage (UV/chlorine).
– Compact footprint requiring minimal civil work
– Fully automated operation for dependable and user-friendly treatment
– Rapid implementation of the STP completed in 1 week
The entire project was completed by Hydromo’s design, delivery, and commissioning teams within one week, including site assessment, delivery of prefabricated, factory-tested modules, efficient assembly and connection of piping on site, and thorough testing and handover to the operator along with operator training. The quick deployment of the STP allowed for the airport project to be completed on schedule without compromising environmental safeguards.
Summary of Outcome/Effectiveness of STP:
The STP has operated successfully with a capacity of 110 KLD and quality recycled water for the following uses:
- Utilities (i.e., toilet flushing, cleaning, cooling)
- Landscapes all over the airport campus.
