Introduction:
Hydromo is a leading provider of innovative and efficient wastewater treatment solutions. We specialize in designing, building, and maintaining Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) that meet the highest environmental standards while keeping operational costs low.
This case study explores how we at Hydromo addressed the unique wastewater management challenges at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA).
Project Approach:
Hydromo joined with GMR at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport(RGIA) to address its growing wastewater management challenges. The RGIA which is a critical hub for travel and commerce, generates a significant volume of wastewater daily. Additionally, the presence of oil and grease from aircraft maintenance activities posed a specific challenge for treatment and disposal.
Project Challenges:
- High-Volume Wastewater Management: RGIA generates a significant daily volume of wastewater from aircraft maintenance activities. Traditional solutions might struggle to handle such a high capacity efficiently.
- Oil & Grease Separation: Aircraft maintenance activities introduce oil and grease into the wastewater stream. These pollutants require specialized treatment for proper removal before safe disposal.
- Meeting PCB(Pollution Control Board) Regulations: Disposing of treated wastewater in an environmentally responsible manner aligned with Pollution Control Board (PCB) regulations was a key priority for GMR.

Hydromo’s Tailored Solution:
Our technical team conducted a comprehensive analysis of RGIA’s wastewater characteristics and flow rates. Based on this assessment, we designed and installed a state-of-the-art 10 KLD (kiloliters per day) ETP specifically tailored to address the airport’s unique needs.
Key Features of the ETP System:
- Advanced Treatment Technology: The ETP utilizes a multi-stage treatment process to effectively remove organic matter, suspended solids, oil and grease and other pollutants.
- Oil & Grease Separation: A dedicated oil and grease separation unit ensures efficient removal of these challenging pollutants from the wastewater stream before further treatment.
Successful Outcomes:
Hydromo successfully installed and commissioned the 10 KLD ETP at RGIA. This robust system now effectively treats the airport’s wastewater, delivering several key benefits:
- Compliance with PCB Regulations: The treated wastewater meets all the requirements set by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) for oil and grease concentration (less than 10 mg/L) and suspended solids (less than 100 mg/L). This ensures environmentally responsible disposal without harming the local water resources.
- Reduced Environmental Impact: By removing harmful pollutants from the wastewater stream, Hydromo’s ETP significantly reduces GMR & RGIA’s environmental footprint.
- Operational Efficiency: The 10 KLD capacity ensures efficient treatment of the high-volume wastewater generated by the airport. Additionally, the system is designed for low operational costs, minimizing long-term expenses for RGIA.
