What is TDS and Why Do The TDS Level Of Drinking Water Matters?

Did you ever wonder what those numbers on your water purifier display stand for? They signify TDS i.e. Total Dissolved Solids, but don’t be afraid of the technical term.

Think about making yourself a cup of tea. You put some sugar and milk into it. These are all dissolved solids. Just think about your drinking water now. It’s not as sweet as tea, but it contains small quantities of minerals and salts that have been dissolved into it. These are the TDS.

What is the importance of TDS?

While some minerals like calcium and magnesium are good for you, others may not be so good. The taste of salt or bitterness in water can indicate a high TDS level. It could also reveal the presence of contaminants such as lead or arsenic which can have very harmful effects on your health. Also, extremely low TDS may signal a lack of vital minerals in our water.

So what is an ideal TDS level?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), drinking water should have less than 300 mg/L TDS level. However, this is just a rule of thumb. The right amount might differ depending on where one stays, local water qualities and personal preferences among other factors. Often a good range lies between 50mg/L-150mg/L for TDS levels.

How do you check your TDS level?

A TDS meter can be purchased online or at most hardware stores; it is a small, handheld gadget that gives you a reading in parts per million (ppm). If you aren’t certain about the result, then consider getting your water tested by a certified laboratory.

What should I do in case of High or Low TDS Values?

Water purifiers come in handy if your TDS level is too high. Reverse osmosis systems or water treatment plants are effective for reducing the concentration of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), similar to what we have at Hydromo. Nonetheless, if you choose an underpriced RO, it can also remove beneficial minerals and thus one may need to add remineralization to the water.

Therefore a premium Water Treatment Plant is necessary, such as Hydromo’s.

When TDS is low, mineral drops might be added to your water. However, before making any changes, it’s always wise to consult an expert on matters concerning water.

However, remember that TDS is just one indicator of water quality. Other things such as pH values and hardness must also be considered. Simply contact your local Water Authority if you have any concerns about your drinking water.

Your health matters so drink clean water!
