Introduction
Hydromo, one of the leading water treatment solutions companies in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, successfully completed a project in Simhapuri, Mattapalli village, Kodad, Suryapet District, Telangana state. The project was undertaken as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities of Nagarjuna Cement Limited (NCL). The objective was to set up two Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) for NCL High School and the staff quarters.
Project Approach
NCL has established an elementary and a high school in English medium at Simhapuri to address the educational needs of villagers in the vicinity. More than 50% of the students benefiting from this initiative are from tribal sectors. The school is equipped with digital smart classes and has a teaching staff strength of 28.
To remain environmentally friendly with their waste discharge, NCL decided to set up a 50 KLD STP for the school and a 30 KLD STP for the staff quarters. The STP technology used was the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR).
Challenges
The site is located in a remote interior village with poor access, 45 km from the nearby major town of Kodad. This posed logistical challenges in terms of transportation of materials and manpower.
The Technology
MBBR technology utilizes polypropylene biofilm carriers that move within an aerated wastewater treatment basin. These carriers support the growth of bacteria, leading to efficient bio degradation. The high-density bacteria population ensures reliability and ease of operation. This technology offers cost-effective, low-maintenance treatment, as it maintains an optimal biofilm level and responds to load fluctuations. The plant’s core component is a reactor for sewage treatment, which can be tailored for various capacities and installed with different tank options.
Outcome
Despite the challenges, Hydromo successfully executed the project. The STPs are now operational and effectively treating sewage from the school and staff quarters. This has ensured that NCL’s operations remain environmentally friendly, particularly given the site’s proximity to the Krishna River.
Conclusion
This case study exemplifies Hydromo’s commitment to providing sustainable environmental solutions even in challenging conditions. It also highlights NCL’s dedication to CSR activities and their efforts to provide quality education while preserving the environment.
