The Application of MBBR Technology in Sewage Treatment Plants
Moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) is a biological technology used for treating sewage and effluent wastewater generated respectively from apartment complexes, commercial establishments or what’s called municipal wastewater as well as industrial wastewaters. application.Â
The other common wastewater treatment method is moving bed film reactor or MBR.
Both of these treat wastewater to remove high organic content. The basic principle in MBBR technology in wastewater treatment is to get bacteria to act on the wastewater to act and treat the wastewater.
MBBR technology sewage treatment plant
MBBR tech was invented in the 1980s. It is a widely used wastewater treatment as it is efficient and also economical.Â
STP MBBR technology uses a moving bed biofilm reactor in sewage treatment plants. It is made of an activated sludge aeration system. The sludge is collected on the plastic carriers which have a large internal surface area. The surface area in the carriers optimizes the contact of water, air, and the bacteria which help in reducing organic waste through denitrification.Â
MBBR can have more than one stage depending on specific needs. The different stages are made of individual tanks separated by screens to ensure that bacteria remain in their specific tank.
MBBR technology in wastewater treatment It contains the following components-
Aeration tank:
The tank is similar to an activated sludge tank. The aeration helps keep the sludge in motion. The MBBR system separates the excess bacteria and sludge. This is directed to the final separator.
Special plastic carriers:
These provide a surface for biofilm growth. Carrier materials in MBBR are made of materials with a density close to that of water. An example is high-density polyethene (HDPE). These carriers are moved in the tank through the aeration system. This ensures good contact between the wastewater and the bacteria growing on the carriers.
MBBR systems use a combination of activated sludge process i.e. suspended growth and biofilter i.e. attached growth. Movement of carriers is enabled by air bubbles through agitation.
Application of MBBR:
MBBR is applicable to the different quality of wastewater treatment. Its use is determined by desired results and regulations controlling discharge nationally.
Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) removal
Nitrification
Denitrification
MBBR technology is applicable in industrial wastewater purification and for municipal wastewater treatment mainly.
Benefits :
- MBBR wastewater treatment system enables efficient results using low energy.
- The technology is used to separate organic substances, nitrification and denitrification.Â
- It saves water.
- It is easy to maintain.
- Is excellent for a high volume of organic load.
- It is not affected by toxic shock
- Enhanced nitrification process due to high effectiveness of sludge retention time (SRT).
- Production of sludge is lower.
- It does not need recycling of the sludge
Finally, MBBR technology is effective for wastewater treatment as it is flexible in its application and can easily be relocated. Lastly, MBR is also ecologically sound.
